A l\u2019association des mots \u00ab\u00a0cin\u00e9ma\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0tch\u00e9coslovaque\u00a0\u00bb, il y a de fortes chance que le cerveau du spectateur lambda g\u00e9n\u00e8re des images granuleuses en noir et blanc de prol\u00e9taires d\u00e9pressifs. Un cin\u00e9ma \u00ab\u00a0sp\u00e9cifique\u00a0\u00bb, comme on dit.\n\nL\u2019histoire du pays n\u2019est pas \u00e9trang\u00e8re \u00e0 ces a priori tenaces. Enti\u00e8rement repris par l\u2019\u00c9tat d\u00e8s la fin de la seconde guerre (et de l\u2019occupation nazie), le cin\u00e9ma tombe sous la coupe communiste apr\u00e8s le putsch de 48, et semble condamn\u00e9 \u00e0 devenir instrument de propagande: toutes les \u0153uvres doivent \u00eatre approuv\u00e9es par le gouvernement. Paradoxe cr\u00e9atif, c\u2019est dans ce climat peu propice \u00e0 son d\u00e9veloppement que la fantaisie va progressivement se r\u00e9pandre dans le 7\u00e8me art tch\u00e8que pour en devenir l\u2019un des versants les plus remarquables. Le film d\u2019animation, en particulier, b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie de talents rares comme ceux de <strong id=\"red\">Jan \u0160vankmajer<\/strong>, qui entame d\u00e8s 1964 une \u0153uvre de premier ordre, qui influencera les animateurs des quatre coins du globe. Venu \u00e9galement de l\u2019animation et du dessin, <strong id=\"red\">Karel Zeman<\/strong> s\u2019illustre d\u00e8s son premier long m\u00e9trage,\u00a0<em id=\"red\">Voyage au c\u0153ur de la pr\u00e9histoire<\/em>\u00a0(1955), comme un jalon indispensable de l\u2019Imaginaire filmique, convoquant les grands th\u00e8mes des litt\u00e9ratures d\u2019aventures et de ses \u0153uvres phares pour leur donner une existence de cellulo\u00efd (la rencontre avec le Baron de M\u00fcnchhausen \u00e9tait in\u00e9vitable). A la suite de Zeman, de nombreux cin\u00e9astes tch\u00e9coslovaques s\u2019emparent des mythes et des contes de f\u00e9es: Alice (avec\u00a0<em id=\"red\">Alice and her week of Wonders<\/em>\u00a0de <strong id=\"red\">Jaromil Jire\u0161<\/strong> en 1970),\u00a0<em id=\"red\">La petite sir\u00e8ne<\/em>\u00a0(<strong id=\"red\">Karel Kachy\u0148a<\/strong>, 1976)\u2026 La nouvelle vague de cin\u00e9astes tch\u00e8ques \u2013 celle qu\u2019on aurait voulu avoir \u2013 revisite les histoires les plus populaires avec une subversion inattendue, assumant un artisanat loin du clinquant du fantastique hollywoodien, et verse dans le surr\u00e9alisme pur. Parmi eux se d\u00e9marque <strong id=\"red\">Juraj Herz<\/strong>, qui apr\u00e8s avoir port\u00e9 un regard fuligineux sur son pays en 1969 avec le troublant\u00a0<em id=\"red\">L\u2019incin\u00e9rateur de cadavres<\/em>, livrera en 1978 un\u00a0<em id=\"red\">Beauty and the Beast<\/em>\u00a0volontier horrifique. Quatre ann\u00e9es plus tard, il s\u2019attaquera \u00e0 un m\u00e9lange des genres inhabituels avec\u00a0<em id=\"red\">Ferat Vampire<\/em>\u00a0et sa voiture buveuse de sang.\nEn 1989, la r\u00e9volution de velours survient. Le communisme s\u2019effondre et le financement du cin\u00e9ma national en est boulevers\u00e9. Certains doivent se tourner vers le reste l\u2019Europe, comme <strong id=\"red\">Ji\u0159\u00ed Barta<\/strong>, talentueux animateur qui confirmera plus tard avec son Dr\u00f4le de grenier que le cin\u00e9ma tch\u00e8que, peu ou mal connu, m\u00e9rite bien un nouvel \u00e9clairage.\n<h4 id=\"red\">Baron Pr\u00e1\u0161il<\/h4>\nRaconter des Cracs. Une sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 du Baron de M\u00fcnchhausen, personnage historique dont les affabulation notoires lui vaudront le nom de \u00ab\u00a0Baron de Crac\u00a0\u00bb. Un personnage truculent, haut en couleur, auquel le cin\u00e9ma rendra hommage \u00e0 de multiples reprises. Pour <strong id=\"red\">Karel Zeman<\/strong>, pas besoin de pol\u00e9miquer sur les all\u00e9gations due l\u2019individu lorsque qu\u2019il se penche sur son cas en 1961. Accompagner le Baron, s\u2019est emprunter la roule de l\u2019imaginaire pur. A bord d\u2019une fus\u00e9e qu\u2019on dirait emprunt\u00e9e \u00e0 <strong id=\"red\">M\u00e9li\u00e8s<\/strong> et <strong id=\"red\">Jules Verne<\/strong>, l\u2019astronaute Tonik rejoint la Lune et y rencontre des figures embl\u00e9matiques de la Haute Aventure, tel Cyrano de Bergerac, et bien entendu le Baron. Tonik et celui-ci partent explorer un monde tant\u00f4t en deux, tant\u00f4t en trois dimensions, o\u00f9 r\u00e8gne l\u2019influence manifeste de <strong id=\"red\">Gustave Dor\u00e9<\/strong>. Papier d\u00e9coup\u00e9s, animation, d\u00e9cors rococos ne dissimulant jamais leur artificialit\u00e9\u2026 Karel Zeman \u00a0sublime un sujet d\u00e9j\u00e0 riche par une multiplication des techniques, une ferveur totale dans l\u2019image et son pouvoir \u00e9vocateur. Le baron de Crac chevauche un boulet de canon (in\u00e9vitable), joue les pinocchios en explorant le ventre d\u2019un gigantesque monstre marin\u2026 Quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard, Gilliam pr\u00e9tendra n\u2019avoir pris connaissance du film de Zeman que durant la pr\u00e9paration houleuse de son propre opus. Difficile de ne pas d\u00e9celer une filiation entre les deux \u0153uvres, m\u00eame si la version de Zeman l\u2019emporte par sa libert\u00e9 et l\u2019inventivit\u00e9 magnifiant chaque photogramme.\n<h4 id=\"red\">Dr\u00f4le de grenier<\/h4>\nAvec <em id=\"red\">Dr\u00f4le de grenier<\/em> (2009), <strong id=\"red\">Ji\u0159\u00ed Barta<\/strong> doit relever deux d\u00e9fis de taille. Le premier tient dans la comparaison h\u00e2tive que l\u2019on pourrait faire entre son film et une certaine \u0153uvre des studios Pixar (dans les deux cas, nous suivons le quotidien d\u2019un groupe de jouets qui s\u2019anime une fois le regard des hommes d\u00e9tourn\u00e9s). Ensuite, l\u2019\u0153uvre devra \u00eatre produite avec de l\u2019aide de \u00a0de son pays natal, r\u00e9volution de velours oblige. S\u2019il r\u00e9sout ce probl\u00e8me en s\u2019associant avec diff\u00e9rents pays europ\u00e9en, Barta r\u00e8gle la confrontation avec <em id=\"red\">Toy Story<\/em> par son approche esth\u00e9tique, l\u2019originalit\u00e9 de son traitement, et un r\u00e9cit aux r\u00e9sonances plus politiques. Cumulant les m\u00e9langes d\u2019animation comme autant d\u2019ingr\u00e9dients de sa mise en sc\u00e8ne (les personnages deviennent des dessins de crayons d\u00e8s qu\u2019ils passent derri\u00e8re une fen\u00eatre, les draps d\u00e9valant d\u2019une armoire deviennent des flots furieux\u2026), Barta cherche le merveilleux dans l\u2019objet le plus anodin, mais en r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00e9galement la part horrifique. Sous ses dehors enfantins,\u00a0<em id=\"red\">Dr\u00f4le de Grenier<\/em>\u00a0raconte l\u2019installation d\u2019un r\u00e9gime totalitaire et les cons\u00e9quences funestes de la propagande. Barta d\u00e9voile l\u2019\u00e2me des poup\u00e9es, mais aussi leur part noire, et le\u00a0<em id=\"red\">Dr\u00f4le de Grenier<\/em>\u00a0manque parfois de devenir un lieu de cauchemar.
